What makes us different

Assessment process

We do these as a single in-person session of 3-4 hours, or split between one in-person and one online session. An ASD assessment typically involves several key components designed to evaluate various aspects of behaviour, communication, and social interaction. Here are some of the steps we usually follow:

An initial clinical Interview with the individual to cover developmental history, current symptoms, communication abilities, social interaction skills, and any sensory sensitivities or behavioural challenges. We mainly use some standardised Questionnaires and Rating Scales such as the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS), which is a semi-structured assessment of communication, social interaction, and play or imaginative use of materials for individuals suspected of having autism. Other tools can be the Autism Spectrum Quotient (AQ) or the Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS). We may request a comprehensive medical evaluation to rule out other conditions that could be causing symptoms similar to ASD. Psychological testing can also assess IQ, adaptive functioning, and screen for co-occurring conditions like anxiety or ADHD.

Gathering information from family members, friends, or others who know the individual well can be invaluable to provide insights into the individual's developmental history, social interactions, and daily functioning. Our functional Assessments assess the individual's ability to perform daily tasks and adapt to different environments. This might include assessments of living skills, educational or occupational functioning.

The Feedback Session is conducted after completing the assessments, to discuss the findings with the individual (and often family members). This session may include a discussion of the diagnosis, recommendations for support or therapy, and guidance for next steps. Each assessment is tailored to the individual, and the exact components may vary based on the person's age, specific concerns, and the setting in which the assessment is conducted.

We produce a comprehensive report thereafter.
